Tech Buddies at Richmond Public Library (Fall 2018)

Responsibilities and Activities
Tech Buddies Volunteers deliver weekly technology assistance sessions for seniors aged 55+ at seniors' facilities in Richmond. Volunteers provide one-on-one help with common devices, including tablets, phones, eReaders, and laptops. This program is offered on a weekly basis between September - December. Each session is facilitated by a team of 2-4 volunteers.

Specific Tasks:
As part of a team of 2-4 volunteers, deliver one-on-one instructional sessions on a variety of devices to older adults once a week, in one of two seniors' facilities.
Offer advice and guidance to older adults in a patient and friendly manner, and corresponding with their needs, interests, and skill levels.
Set up and take down equipment and supplies for each session, as needed.
Assist with program evaluation and provide feedback to RPL staff in order to help us better meet the needs of the program's participants.

Skills Required:
Strong technology skills and experience using laptops, tablets, mobile phones, and/or eReaders
Flexibility and strong problem-solving skills
Experience instructing individuals in one-on-one or small group settings is an asset
Ability to perform duties independently
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with older adults and staff
This volunteer opportunity is available for English speakers as well as bilingual English and Chinese speakers. English-speaking volunteers should be able to communicate effectively in English. Bilingual volunteers should be able to communicate well in English and Mandarin/Cantonese
Ability to complete and maintain a clear criminal record assessment
Ability to complete RPL's photo waiver & liability waiver
Ability to lift up to 25lbs
Ability to arrange own transportation to one of the two program locations
Volunteers are required to receive the influenza vaccination or wear a surgical mask during flu season.

Qualities Desired:
Comfortable leading one-on-one or small group sessions
Friendly and patient demeanor
Enjoy working and interacting with older adults

Volunteers must be able to communicate effectively in English or bilingually in English and Chinese. Additional languages are an asset.

Preference given to adult and senior volunteers, and to volunteers who are able to commit to the duration of the program (September 15 December 15, 2018).

A mandatory orientation is required for all volunteers.

Additional info: Volunteers must complete and maintain a clear criminal record assessment, and complete RPL's photo waiver & liability waiver.
This volunteer position takes place outside the library. Volunteers may encounter challenging or dissatisfied participants.
Volunteers must be able to arrange their own transportation to one of the two program locations and must be able to lift up to 25lbs.
